Join 7644 Squadron

7644 officer talks to media

Go wherever the Royal Air Force goes in the world. Explain our work. Tell our story.

Role

Media operations officers carry out a range of public relations activity for the Royal Air Force and other UK forces at home and abroad. We explain the overall mission and work of the RAF and tell the stories of individuals within it.

If you join, we can guarantee variety. Our officers may be part of one of the smallest units in the Armed Forces, but they are among the most travelled and certainly among the most in-demand specialists in the reserves.

Typical roles include:

- Media relations planning and advice

As part of a media operations team in theatre or on exercise, you will brief commanders, and plan and facilitate media visits. Depending on your level of experience, you could even be commanding a media operations team, responsible for the overall direction and work of your media operations staff.

- Media training

Whether on operations or back in the UK, you will provide training and advice to military personnel on media awareness or interview technique. On exercises, you may provide 'simulated media', creating realistic media content to help people at all ranks understand the importance of the media and how their actions can affect people's understanding of what we do.

- Media escort

You will escort journalists, helping them cover our work accurately, while ensuring they are looked after.

- Content production

Whether it's a story for the local paper, a rushes package for national television, or an audio piece for the web, whether it's online or offline, whether it's for release to the media or for use by Defence's own channels, you will work with professional photographers and videographers to create compelling content in all its forms.

- Supporting communications staff in the UK

You will work with existing media relations staff in the UK using your professional knowledge to support events, provide extra capacity or deliver specific projects.

What we look for

While there is no typical person or personality that 7644 Squadron recruits, we are generally looking for journalists and public relations professionals with at least two years experience. We also recruit former regular Armed Forces personnel with media operations knowledge or experience.

In return you will have the opportunity to be part of some of the biggest stories in the world, to develop your professional skills, to travel across the world, and to be an officer in the Royal Air Force.
