7644 Squadron's main role is to provide the RAF's Media Operations 'Force Element at Readiness' (FE @R) to support operations overseas. Since its members are all professional journalists or PR practitioners, it provides the RAF with an unrivalled level of communications skill; enabling the RAF to communicate with diverse audiences in an often hostile and crowded media environment. Personnel from the Squadron have served 'on the ground' and at headquarters level in locations as diverse as Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Squadron is currently in high demand for operations in Afghanistan and Libya, where our personnel support deployed media relations teams by generating and delivering media plans, providing media training to senior commanders, writing and recording stories for UK media, and hosting journalists covering stories about UK forces.

With personnel deploying to every UK operational Theatre since 1995 - and a readiness level that enable the Squadron to provide individuals both for short, specialist missions and longer periods leading media operations units - 7644 Squadron prides itself on its operational effectiveness, fully embodying the RAF's core skills: Agile, Adaptable and Capable.
