Danger Zone 1: The Sea

Sea Can you guess what dangers lie in open water?

  • Extreme unpredictability
  • Cold water can kill in minutes
  • Lack of food or drinkable water

And how does the RAF train to deal with these dangers?

  • Search and Rescue teams often practise over open water, becoming specialists in:
    - Airlifts from water environments
    - First aid both on the water and in the air
  • And Aircrew teams take part in an intense training course to learn:
    - How to handle unpredictable watery terrain – by being dragged through water by their parachutes!
    - How to stay in good physical and mental shape when stranded on a life raft for eight hours (with only a basic survival kit for company)
