Work in the Community
Sponsoring youth sports and education, raising money for charities – even getting their hands dirty with conservation projects. The RAF is involved in all sorts of community schemes, from the UK to Kenya. Here’s a list of some of Altitude’s favourites:
The Schools Aerospace Challenge
The RAF helps sponsor the Institute of Mechanical Engineers' annual competition for innovation in military aviation. Got a great idea? Get your school involved!
RAF Youth Leadership Courses
The perfect insight into life in the RAF – with a range of challenges (like orienteering and paintballing) that are a great way for young people to learn the leadership qualities they’ll need in the Armed Forces.
RAF Maths and Science workshops
RAF Maths and Science workshops tour the country twice a year, providing fun and engaging lessons that help students understand how the subjects are used in everyday life (and in particular in the RAF). Learn more on the official website and then learn even more in the class!
Youth Sports Sponsorship
Youth basketball and football in England and Scotland, youth rugby and hockey in Wales – they’ve all benefited from thousands of pounds of investment, including leagues, cups and training camps all run by the RAF, not to mention lots of paid-for equipment. Find out more
Marine Turtles Conservation
The numbers of marine turtles are dwindling. That’s why the RAF set up the Turtlewatch Project, a scheme dedicated to protecting the marine turtles that breed on four beaches near RAF Akrotiri (Cyprus). The RAF works with University of Glasgow students to protect these amazing creatures, their nests and their eggs.
RAF Lakenheath
RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It contains rare plants, insects and spiders too. So far, 513 different species have been found!
Red Arrows Macmillan Cancer Fund
Matt Jarvis, a treasured member of the Red Arrows, died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 30 and a fund was set up in his memory. So far, the Red Arrows have raised more than £21,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief
Al-Khora School
RAF Regiment 2 Squadron raised money for a brand new school in Basra (Iraq). Local contractors were employed to build the school for 250 children in six well-equipped classrooms. The school opened in August 2005.
Project Albert
Based in RAF Lyneham (Wiltshire) and set up by Flight Sergeant Eddy Brophy in 1999, this project aims to help relieve poverty and illness, and to improve education in Kenya. To date, he has led three aid missions, making clean water facilities available, building a school and refurbishing an orphanage.
