No 141 Squadron was formed at Rochford on 1 January 1918 as a Home Defence squadron for the London area. In February 1920, the squadron was disbanded whilst based in Ireland but reformed shortly after the start of World War II at Turnhouse as a night fighter squadron. Equipped with Defiants during the Battle of Britain, No 141 suffered terribly at the hands of the German fighters on one day losing 6 out of 9 aircraft.

The Defiants were replaced by Beaufighters during 1941 and these wewre employed on intruder missions over France. At the end of April 1943, it transferred to Wittering and flew night intruder sorties against German airfields in support of Bomber Command. During October, a transfer to Mosquitos was begun and by the end of 1943 the squadron had joined No 100 Group, sending its aircraft along with the bomber stream to interfere with the defending fighters. These operatioins continued for the remainder of the war.
