PGSC
The Potential Gunners Selection Course
To join the RAF Regiment, you must first pass the Potential Gunners Selection Course (PGSC) – formerly known as the Potential Gunner Acquaintance Course (PGAC).
PGSC is a four-day course designed to help you decide whether the RAF Regiment is for you. It also gives us an opportunity to assess your physical fitness and ability to succeed with further training.
PGSC at a glance
- You’ll learn all about the RAF Regiment: the duties we perform, the training we do and our role in operations around the world.
- There will be presentations on pay and allowances.
- During your PGSC you'll undergo diagnostic tests for learning difficulties. This in no way affects your chances of selection. If a learning difficulty is identified, our specialist team will be able to brief you on coping strategies.
- You’ll need to complete a multi-stage fitness test which includes a series of shuttle runs, followed by sit-ups, press-ups and a timed 3-mile run.
- We’ll build your teamwork and leadership skills on the RAF Regiment assault course.
- Skirmish Exercise: This is a battle physical training exercise that aims to replicate the arduous nature of combat operations, testing your endurance to the full. During this exercise you will simulate casualty evacuation, tactical movement through the battle area and the transportation of vital equipment as a team. Minimum standard – DO NOT GIVE UP.
- You’ll meet current RAF Regiment Gunners and have the chance to ask them about their experiences.
Finally you’ll have an interview with instructors, this will give you an opportunity to confirm your interest in joining the RAF Regiment and ask any further questions you may have.
If you’re successful on the PGSC, your next step will be the 29-week Trainee Gunner (TG) course. To prepare you, there will be an in-depth briefing about the TG course. You’ll also visit the TG accommodation to see where you’ll be living and be measured up for a uniform.
Each PGSC course runs from Monday at 9pm to Thursday 2.30pm. Training takes place at RAF Honington in Suffolk. You’ll receive a letter with instructions and travel details before the course.
To attend the Potentail Gunner Selection Course you will have to have passed the RAF Regiment Gunner Pre-Joining Fitness Test.
