The Reverend (Group Captain) Jonathan P M Chaffey MA BA RAF
Rev (Gp Capt) Jonathan Chaffey joined the Royal Air Force in 1990, following a curacy within the Diocese of Liverpool. Posted first to RAF Lyneham during the Gulf War, he has since served at a variety of support, training and operational stations, including RAF Stafford, RAF Finningley, RAF Wittering, RAF Cranwell, RAF Waddington and RAF Lossiemouth. He has also enjoyed a range of deployments, to detachments as far flung as RAF Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands, Al Udeid and Gioia del Colle, as well as service with the Harrier Force on HMS Invincible. His ministry amongst deployed personnel led him to establish a series of courses on listening skills in the workplace and the human factors of deployments. From 2004 to 2007 he was College Staff Chaplain at RAF Cranwell, teaching the Beliefs and Values Programme and initiating the Care in Leadership Course for officer cadets. Since 2007 he has served at HQ Chaplaincy Services in Air Command, first in a training role but now, following 2 tours on Op HERRICK, in overseeing the delivery of chaplaincy on operations and operational units.
He is married to Jane, also ordained as a priest and currently a school chaplain, and they have three daughters. His interests include a variety of sports, especially running, skiing and golf, playing the flute and reading historical biographies.
CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Chaplain-in-Chief Operations is responsible for the following: ensuring the delivery of Chaplaincy on all 1 and 2 Gp units, Directly Administered Units (DAUs) and to Deployed Forces; ensuring the provision of pre-deployment training and post-deployment care of chaplains; advising 1 and 2 Gp HQ staff and COS (Ops) HQ staff, together with Unit Cdrs of DAUs and those within 1 and 2 Gps, on Chaplaincy issues.
