Armed Forces Careers Office The journey begins by visiting your local armed forces careers office, many of which are located all over the country. After passing the aptitude test to the required level, you can apply to join the Royal Air Force as either a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) or a Physical Education Officer (PEdO).

After the initial stages of the application process, potential PTI’s attend a 2 day specialist interview at DCAE Cosford. On successful completion of the interview all applicants then attend Basic Military Training. PTI’s RAF Halton Vetting undertake their training at RAF Halton and PEdO’s at RAF College Cranwell. Physical fitness, general service knowledge and initial ground defence training are some of the elements covered.

After graduating from basic training all PTI’s attend Specialist Trade Training at the RAF School of Physical Training. The 9 month course consists of several modules including coaching and officiating numerous national sports and games and RAF Halton Trg Instructor training, which enables the individual to attain the Personal Trainer Award level 3. All potential PTI’s must also attain the National Pool Lifeguard qualification whilst on the course as well as the European Computer Driving Licence and the foundation modules for an NVQ level 3 in Exercise and Fitness.

After completing trade training it is common practice to serve one tour of duty at a station military gymnasium. During this tour you will develop your instructional and leadership skills through a vast range of activities. All PTI’s and PEdO’s may be selected for Parachute Jump Instructor (PJI) duties at the No 1 Parachute Training School, RAF Brize Norton.

Teaching The PJI course begins with a 3 week Basic Military Parachuting phase, working with all other Airborne units including the Parachute Regiment, Royal Marines and RAF Regiment. This is followed by an intensive 5 month training package consisting of jumping and learning to instruct the fundamentals for several types of static line military parachute. On completion of the course candidates are awarded the coveted PJI Brevet.

After completing at least one tour working within the Military Training Flight, instructing static line parachuting, Despatching Para Troops you can volunteer for consideration to be selected by the Display Flight (RAF Falcons). The selection consists of up to 30 freefall parachute descents that are critiqued and assessed on the following criteria; exit, freefall skills, canopy control and landing accuracy. Candidates also need to demonstrate teamwork, leadership and the potential to become a freefall instructor during their tour on the team.
