RAF Athletes competing in the 800m

Watford Open 1 09

Watford Open - 3 Jun 09

By Flt Lt Ben Trapnell

RAF Athlete It was a small but select group that travelled to Watford for the latest in a series of Open meetings hosted by Watford Athletics club.  These events have a much reduced programme but cater for a huge range of abilities making it an ideal event to come and have a go or have a real push for a personal best.  This match was no exception with over 15 heats of the 800m which saw athletes finishing in times ranging from 2min 30 to 1min 53.  SAC Stuart Powel (Odiham) was first up and performed brilliantly in a packed field to win his race with a well timed charge down the finishing straight.  SAC Travis Culverwell (Odiham) proved he can deal with a challenging race running a well structured race, just being run into third place but looking in control, which bodes well for the Royal Air Force Championships on the 24th of June.

RAF Athlete in the Starting Blocks In the sprint events, Flt Lt Nav Childs (Leeming) had solid runs in both the 100m  and 200m building on his solid form this season to try and find that extra bit of zing!  He produced a powerful run in the 100m, coming through over the final few meters to take victory.  The 200m was much the same story but he had to settle for 3rd place against tough competition.

Overall the evening was a success and for any that would like to come and have a go as well, a further match is being held on the 17th of June covering the 100m, 1500m, 3000m, Long Jump and Javelin.
