The RAFBBA held its Inter-Region Basketball Competition over 22-24 Jan 2010 at RAF Cosford. The event replaced the RAFBBA’s annual Inter-Station tournament which has suffered in recent years from an inconsistency of available teams.
The regions of North, South, East and West were identified and each was represented at the competition.
The Eastern and Western regions both provided 2 teams, unfortunately the South could only provide one team which it entered into the A-Cup, and the North was only able to provide a single team it deemed suitable only for the B-Cup. This provided 3 teams in each category to compete for their respective trophies.
The majority of matches over the 2 days were competitive and provided a balanced competition which was enjoyed by the spectators. The B-Cup was decided by a round-robin competition in which the North won both its matches, therefore claiming the title.
In the A-Cup, the top 2 teams played each other in the event’s finale. The final was a demonstration of the quality of basketball that is played by personnel within the RAF, with a number of current Combined Services and RAF players and a number of former RAF players on court. The final was competitive although it was finally won by the West with a convincing scoreline.
The player judged to have been the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his team throughout the match was Gareth Evans of RAF Odiham.
