Air Cadet FAQs

Who can become an Air Cadet?

Anyone between 13-17 years old is welcome to join - male or female, from all cultures, social backgrounds or religions. Cadets can stay in the ATC until they are 20.

Why should I join the Air Cadets?

Not only is it fun, you can also make new friends, learn unusual skills, take part in activities that you can't do at school or college and gain nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

Who else will be there?

Most squadrons have an average of 30 Cadets so there will be many other people your own age. There will be a team of qualified and experienced adult staff carefully selected to help and instruct you. All adult staff are carefully vetted to ensure your safety.

How often can I attend?

Most squadrons meet twice a week in the evening at the squadron's headquarters. Here you will learn everything you need to know about activities such as flying, adventure training and fieldcraft. You will have the chance to put this knowledge into practice on trips and camps at weekends and school holidays.

How much does it cost to join?

Air Cadets is inexpensive and great value for money! Cadets pay a small contribution per parade night as subscriptions - this varies from squadron to squadron. The money is used to assist with squadron activities.

Do I get a uniform?

Your squadron will provide you with your uniform, which the RAF issues on FREE loan whilst you are an Air Cadet. All you will need to buy are your boots and shoes.

Do I have to go on to join the RAF?

No. However, because we are sponsored by the RAF, we are able to offer flying opportunities in RAF aircraft and visits to RAF bases. But being an Air Cadet won't just help you if you want a Military job - it will give you a head start whatever career path you choose.
