Air Training
While there is no longer any operational flying at RAF Wyton, Tutors of No 57 (R) Squadron, No 1 Elementary Flying Training School provide basic flying training for trainee pilots of the RAF and International Air Forces. The aircraft are also used by the University of London Air Squadron and Cambridge University Air Squadron to provide basic flying instruction and air experience to University Cadets, and by No 5 Air Experience Flight for air experience flying of the Air Training Corps Cadets.
The Tutor aircraft may be seen flying at RAF Wyton, 7 days a week, between 0830 hours and 1700 hours, terminating earlier if daylight or weather restricts (extended evening activity up until 1800 hours in July and August). Additional aircraft movements from the station’s Pathfinder Flying Club also take place during these times. Also located at RAF Wyton, the County air-ambulance and police helicopters operate routinely and in an emergency from the base throughout the day and night.
At RAF Henlow the No 616 Volunteer Gliding Squadron uses Grob Vigilant motor gliders to provide flying instruction through to instructor standard for Air Training Corps cadets.
