Frequently Asked Questions
A selection of questions commonly received by the RAFFCA Committee and their member clubs.
Can I use the Standard Learning Credits (SLC) for my PPL?
As stated in Annex A to PTC/462203/4/TD dated 28 Oct 04 (which is still extant), SLC can be used for flying training theory/ground examinations (including PPL). However, it cannot be used for flight ratings where there is only the addition of aircraft types or it is the renewal of an existing license. The applicant must meet all the other requirements of the scheme.
Which flying clubs are ELCAS registered for the Enhanced Learning Credit Scheme (ELC)?
The following clubs are registered with ELCAS. Please contact the respective club membership rep.
- RAF Kinloss Moray Flying Club
- RAF Halton Aeroplance Club
- RAF Benson Flying Club
- RAF Cranwell Flying Club
Do the Flying Clubs offer a trial lesson or vouchers?
You will need to contact your local flying club to book any lessons and enquire about any vouchers they may sell. This website has a list of associated clubs with a link to their respective website.
What age can I start learning to fly?
You can start learning to fly from any age as long as all the controls can be safely manipulated by the student. A student can only log the flying time against the syllabus unless they are over 14 years old and cannot go first solo until 16. You can hold a PPL from the age of 17.
What training do I need to do so I can get my PPL?
An overview of the syllabus and the training you will need to do to achieve your PPL can be found on this website. The JAR-FCL(A) PPL consists of a minimum of 45 hours with 7 multiple choice ground exams and an RT (Radio Telephony) practical for issue of the RT Licence. You will also have to hold a minimum of a class 2 medical certificate issued by a CAA Authorised Medical Examiner (AME). The course is complete when the student has met the syllabus requirements and has successfully completed a skills test. The NPPL (National PPL) is a 32 hour course; however, does not allow certain privileges that the JAR-FCL(A) PPL allows.
