RAF at Woodhall Spa, Jul 09
RAF v Civil Service and RAF Golf Society
The RAFGA Representative side undertook the annual fixtures against the Civil Service and RAF Golf Society on 15 and 16 Jul at Woodhall Spa Golf Club. A strong side consisting of 8 of the 12 players recently selected for the Inter Service squad was on display.
The first game was played against a Civil Service side with only 2 of their 10 players possessing a handicap above scratch. Regrettably, the morning foursomes results went the way of the Civil Service. Although the pairings of Steve Davies/ Dean Lewis and Steph Usher/Andy Moss lost closely fought matches on the 18th, the only point was gained by the pairing of Chris Audin/Liam Pucill who managed to secure a victory down the last hole. This left the side with a mountain to climb in the afternoon. The RAF Captain, Dean lewis, sent out his big guns at the top of the order to try to gain some momentum; however, the opposition Capt did exactly the same and nullified the threat. Nevertheless, deserved victories from Billy MacLoed, Andy Moss, Steph Usher, Ian Robinson and Neil Franklin meant that the side achieved parity in the afternoon singles. Unfortunately, this meant that the overall match score was 9-6 in favour of the Civil Service. See Results
The next day saw a game played against a RAFGS side consisting of 9 ex Inter Service players. The Captain decided to keep faith with the previous days pairings but tinkered with the order in the morning foursomes. A much improved performance resulting in victories for the pairings of Chris Audin/Liam Pucill, Ian Robinson/Mal Wray and Billy MacLoed/Iain Graham and a half from the pairing of Steve Davies/Dean Lewis meant that the side went into lunch with a healthy lead. The afternoon also saw strong performances from the top half of the draw which meant that victory was achieved relatively early. Good wins from Liam Pucill, Iain Graham, Andy Moss, Billy MacLoed and Mal Wray coupled with halves from Steve Davies and Dean Lewis meant that the side had earned a creditable 9.5 – 6.5 winning margin. Strong results in the singles and a vast improvement in the foursomes left the RAF Captain happy with the overall performance. The side have one final warm-up game against the RAF ‘A’ team early in Sep at Seacroft Golf Club prior to the Inter Services being held at Saunton Golf Club from 14 to 17 Sep.
