About Us

About us

RAF Leuchars is home to the RAF’s newest multi role jet fighter, the Typhoon FGR4 which are on high alert to scramble and intercept intruders into UK airspace. The delivery of this operational task requires contributions from many sections across RAF Leuchars and is testament to the team ethos and efforts of all personnel involved.

From RAF Leuchars, at any one time, between 5-10% of our men and women are engaged on operations and deployments in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The excellent contribution of RAF Leuchars personnel, at home and abroad, provides critical support to the delivery of the RAF’s operational tasks.

The development of all RAF Leuchars personnel is a high priority. Leuchars is one of the best Stations in the RAF for outdoor and adventurous activities; particularly hill walking, mountaineering and water sports. The sporting life on Station is vibrant and there are teams for all major sports. Leuchars personnel have been on expedition training all over the world and there are clubs covering activities from computers to sea-angling and from riding to sub-aqua. There is a thriving social life on base, while the local University towns of St Andrews and Dundee also offer the full array of social activities. Rail and road travel is easy and we have some of the finest scenery in Scotland on our doorstep.

RAF Leuchars also hosts the only remaining Battle of Britain Airshow, the 2nd largest non-sporting outdoor event in Scotland. Last year, a record of over 50,000 people attended the Airshow and in excess of 1,000 RAF personnel were involved on the day. The Airshow provides an ideal opportunity to increase the public’s understanding of the Service within the overall Defence context.

Future of RAF Leuchars

The RAF will continue to support current operations to the best of its ability whilst preparing for potential operations.

None of the above could occur without our tremendous support personnel (Service personnel, Civil Servants or contractors) and the local community who make the excellent capabilities of the RAF possible. We remain grateful for the support of the UK public.
