Forward Support Wing comprises the following Squadrons - Tornado Maintenance School (TMS), Forward Engineering Squadron (FES), Forward Logistics Squadron (FLS) and Engineering Operations Squadron (EOS).

Wg Cdr Lloyd joined the RAF in Sep 91, having gained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester University. Following IOT and specialist engineer training, his first tour was a JEngO on Hercules aircraft, were he was responsible for the day-to-day servicing and rectification on the Sqn’s fleet of approximately 30 C-130 ac. In Oct 94, after successfully completing a second 6-month specialist engineer course, he took up the post of OC Engineering Plans Flt at RAF Bruggen, where he was responsible for the planning of all maintenance activities on the Stn’s fleet of Tornado GR1 ac. His next appointment was as OC Tornado Maintenance Flt at the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment (TTTE) at RAF Cottesmore. Having arrived in Dec 97, his Flt carried out Second-Line servicing on the Stn’s mixed fleet of GAF, ItAF and RAF Tornado ac. Leading up to the closure of TTTE in Apr 99, his duties changed to ensure that the Air Forces’ ac were modified to an acceptable national standard before they were returned to their parent countries. Following the closure of TTTE, Wg Cdr Lloyd was then posted to the Jaguar IPT at RAF Wyton as the Engineering Authority for the Adour engine, where he was responsible for the airworthiness of this engine that was fitted to both the Jaguar and Hawk ac.

In Aug 00, Wg Cdr Lloyd was promoted to Sqn Ldr. Moving to the Tornado IPT as the Support Authority for the RB199 Accessories and Control Systems, he was responsible for the airworthiness, availability and financial aspects of this equipment. In Jun 03, Wg Cdr Lloyd was posted to RAF Lossiemouth as SEngO on 14 Sqn. This tour included two detachments to the Gulf on OP TELIC and several overseas exercises. His focus was to maximise the availability of the Sqn’s fleet of Tornado GR4 ac. In May 05, Wg Cdr Lloyd was posted to HQSTC as SO2 Engineer Branch Sponsor. Reporting directly to the 2-Star Head of Branch, he was responsible for the recruitment, training and employment policy for the Engineer Officers in the RAF.

In Aug 06, Wg Cdr Lloyd was selected for the year-long ACSC, during which he was promoted to Wg Cdr. There then followed a posting to HQ Air Cmd as SO1 Planning Round (PR), where he developed and co-ordinated the £16bn Air Domain PR bid, which covered both the Cmd’s operating costs and the DE&S in-Service support programme for the Cmd’s equipment. Wg Cdr Lloyd took up the post of OC FSW at RAF Marham in Aug 09.

In addition to his BEng(Hons) (First Class) in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester University, Wg Cdr Lloyd has a Masters Degree in Defence Administration (MDA) from Cranfield University, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. A Chartered Engineer, he is also an active member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, where he sits on the Institute’s Aerospace Industries Divisional Board.

Wg Cdr Lloyd is married and has 2 children. He enjoys playing the guitar, sailing and skiing as well as spending time with his family and walking.
