Off Road Exploits by RAF Marham Team

RAF Marham hits the Off-Road by Sqn Ldr Jez Kerswill

Two vehicles from RAF Marham have excelled in their first two military driving exercises organised by the British Armed Forces Association.

The exercises emphasis is in advanced driver training within a competitive environment. It offers more than merely expanding driving skills, it seeks to develop team work, accurate navigation, co-ordination and to a lesser degree, physical stamina.

In the first exercise Scottish Rover in the Otterburn training area and the Kielder Forest. Cpl Steve ‘Grizz” Grimshaw and Sqn Ldr Jezz Kerswill finished 1st in the Newcomers class and Cpl Richie Parker and FS Steve McMillan finished 5th, finishing 7th and 32nd respectively overall.

The next event was Ex4 WDRIVING FORCE held at MOD Police Training Centre in Wethersfield, Essex.

This time Sqn Ldr Kerswill was with replacement navigator Flt Lt John Podmore while the other crew remained unchanged. Good results were achieved once more, sixth and thirteenth at the halfway point. The second half of the competition involved blind trials driving in which Sqn Ldr Kerswill achieved the perfect score of zero penalties over the six stages!

Later at the Presentations there was an eleventh hour controversy due to protests over alleged problems with route markers in the first half of the competition leading to a cancellation of the first half placings. A few calculations later it resulted in a one, two for RAF Marham.
