Why We Are Here?
Station Commanders Foreward
Welcome to the Remote Radar Head (RRH) Neatishead website
RRH Neatishead is a small Unit based within the Norfolk Broads and close to Norwich. For those of you that are joining our team, I will see you when you arrive and I believe you will enjoy your time here enormously. For those that are just visiting the site, please take some time to peruse the various snippets of information and learn about our role as a RRH.
The aim of this Unit is to provide radar, ground-to-air radio and data links coverage as part of the UK Air Surveillance And Control System (ASACS), in support of national and NATO air defence; a task that has become increasingly important after the tragic events of 9/11.
RRH Neatishead is situated in North Norfolk, 11 miles north east of Norwich. The unit first became operational as an RAF radar station in 1941 during World War II. Following numerous modernizations and upgrades, it remained the longest continuously operational radar site in the world, until Jun 2004 when radar operations ceased due to the draw down of the station. The drawdown of the RAF Neatishead site was completed on 6 Dec 05, with 70% of the old station site handed over for Defence Estates Lands for disposal.
Remote Radar Head Neatishead received operational status on 1 Apr 2005 and consists of 6 separate sites: RRH Neatishead site, its nearby Transmitter and Receiver sites, together with Trimingham and Weyborne sites on the north Norfolk coast. There is also a Single Living Accommodation area at Sprowston, Norwich.
