FAQ's
I have never ridden before. Is that a problem?
No, not at all. You will learn very quickly, as you get so involved in the game that riding will become second nature. Polo riding is quite different from standard English riding it sometimes can be an advantage to start from a clean slate with no bad habits!Tidworth Polo Club, (home of military Polo) organize beginners' courses specifically for non-riders, and by the end of the 3 days you will be hitting the ball at least 30 yards at a canter!
Do I have to own a horse to play?
No you don't! Horses will be provided by Tidworth or other polo clubs at reduced rates to all those who need them.
I have never played before. Where can I learn to play and when can I start?
We recommend you start on one of the 3 day beginners' courses at Tidworth. They organize excellent courses throughout the grass season (from April to September), which will get you started on the right foot. More information can be found on their website.
RAF Cranwell: If you live at or close to Cranwell, instructional chukkas and polo lessons are organized regularly at Ledenham Polo Club. Contact Flt Lt Dave Black on Waddington Ext 7460 for further information.
I heard polo is an expensive sport, is that true?
It certainly can be. But if you play through the services, you will get subsidized quite a lot. Tidworth for instance offer courses at Service rates, and if you decide you want to play more regularly, membership is also offered at reduced rates according to your rank.
I have played before, and would like to make the RAF team.
The RAFPA is always looking at improving their main team. The RAF B team is selected at the start of the season at the Cranwell training weekend in May, so if you do well on that day you will stand a very good chance of making the B team next year. There is also a development squad aimed at players new to the game, to increase their match practise and help them progress towards the B team level.
What equipment do I need to start playing polo?
All you need is a pair of jeans, boots or chaps and a riding hat. Polo sticks will be provided on the day.
How many players are there on the team?
Firstly Polo is a mixed sport, although there are ladies competitions.
There are four players on each team. No1 plays at the front; always the optimist, he/she is either waiting for the ball to be passed up or clears the way for another player to come through with the ball. No2 plays centre front, No3, often the most active player on the team, plays centre back and No4 plays back, and is usually known for being a strong and reliable hitter.
When can I start?
