The application process

As an RAF Reservist, you’ll be part of a highly valued team. You’ll be wearing the same uniform as an RAF regular and undertaking the same role as your regular counterpart. That’s why, once you’ve applied to join, the selection process for entry into the RAF Reserves is virtually the same as it is for the regulars.

Here’s how the application and selection process works.

Step 1: Get in touch

Your first step is to contact us. If you’re ready to apply now to join the RAF Reserves, you can do this by following the ‘apply online’ link at the bottom of this page. If you would prefer to talk to someone to find out a little bit more, ring the RAF Reserves information line on
0845 606 9069.

Step 2: Attend a squadron open/information day

Once you’ve been in touch, you’ll be invited to attend a squadron open/information day. This is a chance for you to visit the squadron of your choice and ask questions. You can see what life in the RAF Reserves is all about and find out about the trade you’re interested in.

Step 3: The selection process

Officer selection process – The selection process for RAF Reserves officers mirrors the process for the regulars and involves four days at the Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) at the RAF College Cranwell. To find out more, visit the OASC section of the website.

Airman Selection Test – The aptitude tests you’ll take as part of the RAF Reserves selection process are known as the Airman Selection Test (AST). The purpose of the AST is to find out which trades might suit you.

Selection interview – The interview is another opportunity for you and us to confirm that joining the RAF Reserves is the right step for you.

Health assessment – Everyone who applies to join the RAF Reserves needs to pass a medical to ensure that they are fit for the job.

Fitness test – You’ll need to demonstrate that you’re fit enough to join the RAF Reserves and robust enough to undertake the training.

Attestation – If everything goes well, you’ll become a member of the RAF Reserves.
