More about this squadron

2622 Squadron is a highly respected unit both within the local community and further afield. We specialise in force protection and the majority of our Reservists are Gunners. Gunners are trained as riflemen and provide ground defence to prevent attacks on airfields and keep the flight pathways clear.

The key to our success is our effective, enjoyable and realistic training combined with our experienced training staff and high morale and sense of camaraderie within the ranks.

History and heritage

Our squadron is the northernmost RAF Force unit in the United Kingdom and was formed in 1979 to assist with the ground defence of RAF Lossiemouth. Initially, our Reservists were recruited solely from the local area, but we now recruit from Edinburgh, Glasgow, north Scotland, and the east and west coasts of Scotland.

Our Reservists are entitled to wear the Grey Douglas tartan kilt as part of their Mess uniform. This is a privilege granted to all Scottish Reservists by King Edward VIII.

Roles and specialist skills

As a Gunner, you are part of a highly mobile and heavily armed team, trained and organised to protect RAF assets and counter threats to the RAF’s aircraft and bases. You form part of a range of groups, from vehicle-mounted patrols to Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Warning and Report Cells.

You will have to master a range of skills, which include infantry tactics, covert observation, target acquisition and close combat skills. Gunners also receive specialist weapons training, so you will become expert at handling everything from a bayonet to an anti-tank missile.

Combat training is physically and mentally demanding and can take place anywhere in the world, from the jungle to the Arctic. You need to be fit, active and prepared to endure difficult and demanding situations. For reasons of combat effectiveness, women cannot be accepted for this role.

Recent deployments

Many of our Reservists have served in the USA, Cyprus, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Gibraltar, the Gulf and all over the UK.
