RAF Spadeadam Conservation

RAF Spadeadam is rich in terms of nature and conservation with five Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) comprising blanket bog, rivers, ancient semi-natural woodland and geological formations. The mires and rivers are also designated as candidate Special Areas of Conservation (SAC). The habitats and notable fauna such as the Red Squirreland otter highlight the importance of RAF Spadeadam contributing to national and local Biodiversity Action Plans.

Red Squirrel

Our objectives are to ensure the statutorily designated sites are maintained and put in to favourable conservation condition through appropriate management.

Black Grouse

On non-designated sites, our objectives are, to protect, enhance and where appropriate extend other habitats such as upland heath and herb rich hay meadows. This will benefit a range of fauna including Black Grouse, Bats, RoeDeer, Raptors, Waders, Large Heath Butterfly and other rare invertebrates.
