The 2024 Working Families Best Practice Awards has recognised the RAF as the winner of the ‘Best for Mothers’ category.
Judges at the national charity for working parents and carers were impressed by our measures to ease the transition for mothers coming back to work and by the support that is available at all stages of parenthood. Entrants for the awards included a range of other high profile national and international companies.
“We are delighted to have received this award. It recognises the significant improvements that the RAF has made to policies to support women and mothers. We know that there is still more we can do. We continue to look at other opportunities so that everyone has the chance to thrive and families are supported.”

Support starts from the day a mum-to-be announces her pregnancy or says she has started on a parenting pathway. Parent support packs have been developed to help mothers and line managers understand entitlements, alongside signposting to a wide range of support services.
Last year, a coaching programme delivered by external providers was introduced to support the transition to motherhood.
Mothers who have completed one year’s service are eligible for an enhanced 26 weeks’ maternity leave at full pay. There is also an option to transfer leave between partners or individuals who share parental responsibility and are employed in the Armed Forces, which means a woman could be on full pay for up to 12 months. Shared Parental Leave, Statutory and Shared Parental Pay is available to all parents equally.
Part-time work for mothers returning after maternity leave is also an option where it meets organisational needs. Mums can choose formal or informal flexible working options. Managed Career Intermissions from 6 months to 3 years can be requested. Appropriate physical or mental health support, including a graduated return to fitness classes and support through counselling is available. Breastfeeding rooms are provided across the RAF and a breastfeeding plan can be put in place for individuals.
Wrap-around term time childcare is also available to all serving parents with children aged 4-11.
Retention rates remain high for mothers returning to work after their first child and there has been a significant increase in the use of formal, flexible working arrangements which, coupled with the ability to work flexibly on an informal basis, enables mothers to find a working solution that fits their family’s circumstances.
