Defence delivers specialist medical assistance to Turkey

Medical specialists from Tactical Medical Wing and 16 Medical Regiment have deployed to Turkey on a Royal Air Force C130J Hercules aircraft to provide vital emergency treatment to those critically injured by the catastrophic earthquake.

Army Medical specialists from 16 Medical Regiment will transit to Türkoğlu with a deployable medical treatment facility which was brought into Turkey on a C130J Hercules. The facility will have an Intensive Care Unit, surgical bay and emergency department to provide urgent medical care to those who need it most. They will be joined by more 16 Medical Regiment and RAF Medical Services personnel over the coming days to increase capacity to provide urgent care.

When the Earthquake hit, 16 Medical Regiment were conducting training overseas on how to respond to a humanitarian crisis. Responding to situations of this nature is one of the key roles of our unit and the British Armed Forces. Our unit is bringing together world leading medical equipment, people and experience and we are determined to offer as much support and assistance to the people of Turkey as possible.

The UK is part of the 20 NATO countries that are sending emergency response personnel to Turkey to support rescue and relief operations in areas devastated by Monday’s earthquake. More than 1,400 responders have been sent from allied countries, along with prospective members Finland and Sweden.
