RAF Founders Day Service

This year’s 105th ‘Commemoration of the Formation of the RAF took place at St Clement Danes Church on Sunday 16th April.

On a gloriously warm morning, the church saw the gathering of the RAF’s Senior Leadership Team, Reservists and Cadets who filled the pews alongside civilians who had a connection with the RAF.

The Central Band of the RAF under the Principal Director of Music, Wing Commander Morrell OBE MVO RAF played as guests made their way into the church under the watchful eye of the RAF’s Ceremonial Team.

The Service was conducted by The Reverend (Squadron Leader) Perry, the resident Chaplain with the sermon being given by The Venerable Dr (Air Vice Marshal) Legood MBE KHC RAF, Chaplain-in-Chief.

The theme this year was ‘Selfless Service’ and readings were given by the Chief of Air Staff and Group Captain Latchman AFC MA RAF.

It was also the first time the RAF had heard its new hymn, Per Ardua Ad Astra with words by Grahame Davies and music by Paul Mealor, both of whom were in the congregation to hear the piece played publicly for the first time.

All attendees were invited to the Royal Courts of Justice post the Service for a Reception that saw old friendships re-kindled and provided a great opportunity to reflect on the morning.
