RAF Operating Department Practitioners

Today marks National Operating Department Practitioners Day; the RAF join celebrations by commending these integral members of the theatre team providing peri-operative patient care. 

Operating Department Practitioners are responsible for the running of the theatre and its specialised equipment as well as being multi-functional as part of the anaesthetic, scrub and recovery teams.

Sergeant Loake and Flight Sergeant Robin

RAF Operating Department Practitioners Sergeant Loake and Flight Sergeant Robin were involved in Exercise ATHENA DRAGON with the Hospital Staging Unit.  This Exercise was critical in the assurance of the RAF Hospital Staging Unit, which has now been declared to the Defence Medical Service Capability Catalogue.

Corporal Calvey

Corporal Calvey works at Joint Hospital Group South West,  within the Operating Department as part of a multi-disciplinary NHS and military team, providing perioperative care for elective and emergency patients.

He recently deployed aboard RFA Argus (a Primary Casualty Receiving Ship) for Exercise MEDICAL RESPONSE, where the Operating Department Practitioner team validated their ability to provide an effective surgical capability at sea.

Corporal MacLennan

Corporal MacLennan is an Operating Department Practitioner at Joint Hospital Group South West working with the NHS keeps his clinical skillset ready to provide support to overseas operations when required.  He is also the Profession Specialist Advisor and gives advice on the capabilities of the Operating Department Practitioner Profession and how to develop it for the future.
