Flight Lieutenant Kathy Morten

Role

My career highlight so far

I've been really lucky with my experiences so far in my career, but the highlight for me has always been the people that I work with. As a Junior Engineering Officer, I had a mixed team of civilian and military staff and the breadth of experience and knowledge that they brought with them was a huge asset. Bringing A400 into operational service brought with it loads of engineering challenges, but watching the team work together and buoy each other up was really inspiring and reminded me often that we have truly selfless and talented people working in the RAF.

The best thing about my current role

I’m currently working within the Chinook Delivery Team as an Avionics Engineering Authority. I support operations of the in-service fleet by managing the Defensive Aids, including weapons systems and explosives. That means liaising with industry partners, the various engineering teams at RAF Odiham and RAF Benson, and Joint Helicopter Command, to make sure that we have the right technical support in place to keep the fleet flying safely and operationally effective. It’s often tested my technical abilities and I’ve been able to delve really deeply into specific systems and airworthiness management principles which I’ve really enjoyed.
