Squadron Leader Marcus Ramsden

Role

My career highlight so far

Junior Engineer Officer on the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, where I acted as a resource manager, military commander and professional engineer overseeing day-to-day Red Arrows engineering. I also led a team called Circus, engineering technicians chosen to fly in the passenger seat of the Red Arrows’ Hawk fast-jets during the display season. Highlight was flying with Red 1 to China in 2016 covering 20,000 miles, 18 countries and 41 refuel stops. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the team as I acted as an Armed Forces ambassador, promoted the best of British and helped inspire the next generation.

The best thing about my current role

As a Senior Engineer Officer I currently support Hawk aircraft engineering in the 1 Group Hawk Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO). My role is to make sure 100 Sqn’s Hawk aircraft are safe, while increasing availability and ensuring engineering compliance. The best thing about the job is the variety. Every day is different and there's always a new engineering challenge. These could be quick-to-fix issues or ones that require industry engagement with BAE Systems, DE&S and Rolls-Royce. One of the most satisfying aspects of the role is knowing you’re part of a highly-skilled, supremely-motivated team, where each individual is respected and uses their expertise to make the RAF a world-class Service.
