THE SQUADRON

No. 1 Tactical Police & Security Squadron (1TPSS) delivers enhanced Aviation Security and Law Enforcement to protect the Air Wing element of Air Mobility Force when deployed throughout the world.

The Squadron also holds wider responsibilities in support of the Air Security Force output, including wider Defence readiness, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief support, Non-Combatant Evacuation duties and contingency operations. The Squadron is the immediately deployable unit within the Air Security Force.

The Squadron is based at RAF Brize Norton and RAF Honington.

RAF Police serving on No. 1 Tactical Police & Security Squadron can be based at RAF Brize Norton or RAF Honington and are uniquely trained to operate around the world, using specialist equipment regardless of the terrain or threat.

As the RAF’s very high readiness policing asset, No. 1 Tactical Police & Security Squadron provide deployed security and law enforcement support to RAF operations and exercises in the UK and overseas.

1TPSS are the only Sqn who employ RAF Police Military Aviation Protection Officers. MAPO teams provide physical protection and security to aircraft, aircrew, mission essential equipment, and other designated personnel.

History

1939 - The first RAF Tactical Provost Unit formed and deployed to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force.

1944 - Small RAF Tactical Provost Sections were formed to deploy as part of the D-Day landings, notably at Sword and Juno beach.

1968 - The first iteration of the Squadron was formed with the name “Support Squadron” under the “RAF Provost and Security Services”, with the purpose to provide a force reserve of RAF Police for the Provost Marshal to deploy in support of operations, exercises and other contingencies.

1996 - Support Squadron was retitled the “Tactical Police and Security Squadron” as part of an increased focus on support to deployed Operations.

2001 - Tactical Police and Security Squadron amalgamated with RAF Police elements of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force to form the Tactical Provost Wing, comprising of 2 regular Tactical Provost Squadrons and 1 reserve Squadron.

2017 - Elements of No 1 (Tactical) Police Squadron move to RAF Brize Norton in order to be better placed to support Air Mobility Force Operations. Renamed the Air Security Flight.

2021 to 2022 – Tactical Police Flights were embedded within RAF Regt Field Squadrons.

2022 - Tactical Police Flights and Air Security Flights are amalgamated to reform No 1 (Tactical) Police and Security Squadron, with elements based at RAF Brize Norton and RAF Honington.
