THE SQUADRON

No2 Mechanical Transport Squadron (2MT) is the Royal Air Force’s road going heavy lift capability. 2MT’s history stretches back to the Battle of Britain when the RAF Drivers transported spares and equipment between airfields. Today the squadron operates a fleet of specialist vehicles, capable of moving anything from fuel and water to aircraft towing tractors.

BASED AT

History

1940 - The unit was formed on 16th July 1940 as No 2 Mechanical Transport Company.

1943 - The earliest records held on the unit show that the Company ran 63,070 miles and carried 1,200 tons of freight during October 1943.

1946 - the Company moved to Royal Air Force Leicester East.

1947 - the Company moved again, this time to Royal Air Force Warton to be parented by No 9 Maintenance Unit.

1949 - The Company moved again in April  to Royal Air Force Bicester..

1957 - The Queen approved the Squadron Crest in April 1957.

1990 - The Squadron supported Operation Granby, in the Gulf War, which generated very intense and extensive tasking throughout the 12 months.

1992 - No 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron disbanded and the operational elements reformed as No 2 Mechanical Transport Flight, within Station Mechanical Transport Squadron at No 16 Maintenance unit Royal Air Force Stafford. The Flight was commanded by a Warrant Officer, with a manpower establishment of 46. The vehicle fleet consisted of 38 prime movers and 47 trailers.

2024 - No 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron operates from RAF Wittering as part of 85 Wing.
