606 Squadron RAuxAF

Provides reservists in ground-support branches to reinforce the Support Helicopter Force within Joint Helicopter Command.

About

Based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, Squadron personnel augment various ground branches: RAF Regiment, Operations, Engineering, Mechanical Transport, Supply, Catering, Personnel Support and Air Traffic Control. Formed 1996 as the Helicopter Support Squadron, before renaming as 606 (Chiltern) Squadron in 1999. The squadron recruits nationally due to its specialist role supporting Joint Helicopter Command. 606 Squadron has deployed globally in the last decade.

History

1939   The squadron code ‘BG’ was allocated to No. 606 Squadron RAuxAF, but it was not activated during World War Two. 

1996   Formed as the Helicopter Support Squadron of the RAuxAF at RAF Benson.

1999   Awarded its 606 Squadron number after operations in the Balkans.
