Personnel from across RAF Benson came together on Monday 11 November to commemorate Remembrance by planting 4,414 spring bulbs that will bloom in time for D-Day celebrations in 2025.

The bulbs were planted around the Gate Guardian. Each one commemorates a member of the Allied Troops who lost their life during D-Day.

Flying Officer Burcombe, Station Training Officer, helped organise the event.

This activity will give those serving here at Benson and their families, the opportunity to undertake a horticultural activity which research shows can improve mental health. By spring we aim to see a variety of bulbs blooming in a variety of colours and types, reminding us not only of the sacrifice made but the diversity of those who made it.

Overseeing the event was Station Warrant Officer Warrant Officer Warren.

Remembrance is a hugely significant event for all service personnel and their families. I cannot think of a more fitting way to mark the occasion. Not only is Remembrance significant, but it is also extremely poignant to be planting bulbs that will bloom to mark another key event in the military calendar. The act of coming together at times like this is an important part of military life and an excellent way to support the mental wellbeing of our people and their families.
