Members of the Air Command and Control Force gathered with pride for the unveiling of a new memorial dedicated to Usworth Airfield. This historic site has played a significant role in aviation history and the memorial was unveiled at the airfield’s original location in Hylton, Sunderland.

Members of the Air Command and Control Force gathered with pride for the unveiling of a new memorial dedicated to Usworth Airfield.

The memorial, installed by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, commemorates Usworth Airfield’s story which began in October 1916 and concluded in March 1984. The ceremony marked a poignant moment of remembrance for the airfield that was once home to Number 36 Squadron before the Royal Air Force departed in 1958.

The ceremony featured a series of tributes and reflections on Usworth Airfield's pivotal role in military aviation. Members of the Air Command and Control Force gathered to honour the contributions and sacrifices made by those who served at the airfield.

The new memorial not only marks the historical importance of Usworth Airfield but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of aviation and its impact in the region.
