Brize Takes Home Silverware From the RAF Table Tennis Championships

Last week three personnel, Sergeant Bache, Senior Aircraftmen Grocock and Hudson, represented Royal Air Force Brize Norton at the RAF Table Tennis Championships 2022.

First, was the Station Team event, where a team of 3 from each station played each other. Nine 9 games in all, and team Brize beat RAF Boulmer 6-3, then into the next round the success continued when Brize won against RAF Waddington 5-4. This was then followed by the final, where the skill of team Brize bagged a 5-4 win against RAF Benson, which awarded them their first piece of silverware.

In the second event Sergeant Bache and Senior Aircraftman Grocock played in the Station Doubles and after 4 good wins made it into the final where again their skilled technique won them their second piece of silverware.

The second part of the championships saw the start of the open singles, U25s, Vets, Open Doubles, Ladies and Mixed Doubles. After such a great start to the tournament hopes were high, but the standard of all the competitors was very good.  Sergeant Bache made it through to the quarterfinals of the Open Singles, then he, together with Senior Aircraftman Grocock made it to the semi-finals of the open doubles. Senior Aircraftman Grocock, after being knocked out the main singles event went on to play in the Plate Cup Final and was successful in winning.

At the trophy presentations Sergeant Bache was also awarded the best newcomer, so all in all a fantastic RAF Table Tennis Championships for team Brize!

"This was a terrific result for Brize, as all three of us had never played together before, and to bring home the silverware for the Station team event for the first time ever [the tournament trophy as been played for since 1955] is a great achievement… and then to top-off with the station doubles as well, was great. For SAC Grocock to win the singles plate event and for me to get best newcomer was a wonderful end to a first-time appearance. Hopefully we can continue with our successes in the future.”
