New Officer Commanding for Number 47 Squadron

Wing Commander Richard Fawkes has formally handed command of the RAF’s front line C-130J Hercules unit, 47 Squadron, to Wing Commander James Sjoberg, moments after they landed at RAF Brize Norton from visiting the Squadron’s detachment supporting Operation SHADER from RAF Akrotiri.

Number 47 Squadron is the only front line C-130J Squadron in the RAF, and delivers Tactical and Strategic Air Transport in support of operations and exercises worldwide.

“I am immensely proud of what the men and women of 47 Squadron have achieved despite the challenges of the pandemic. Their sacrifices have assured our unbroken support to operations and enabled our continued and intense training that guarantees our readiness.

"Successes such as large parachute operations into Ukraine and Jordan and the C-130J’s heavy involvement in Op PITTING, during which 47 Squadron flew the first and last missions out of Kabul in support of the UK evacuation, are testament to the dedication of this highly professional team.

"I wish James the best of luck in leading 47 Squadron to the end of the C-130J’s RAF service in 2023."

Outgoing Officer Commanding No. 47 Squadron

"I am honoured to return to 47 Squadron as the Squadron Commander. It is my dream job. It was a pleasure to visit squadron personnel on operations at RAF Akrotiri – 47 Squadron has been continuously deployed on operations for more than 20 years and I was proud to see the detachment in such good shape.

"My priorities will be to deliver UK Defence output right up to C-130J retirement, to look after the people on my Squadron, and support the A400M force as it prepares to take on new roles in the future. I would like to thank Richard for his service to 47 Squadron and wish him the very best luck in the future. ”
