Wedgetail engineering building opens at RAF Lossiemouth

The new Line Engineer Building at RAF Lossiemouth has been officially opened.

This new infrastructure is key to the development of RAF Lossiemouth as is prepares for the arrival of the new E-7 Wedgetail aircraft in 2025.

The facility was opened by Air Commodore Alex Hicks. The building was completed in August 2024 by principal contractor McLaughlin & Harvey. Included in the project were five Scottish businesses, one of these was local subcontractor, Simmers Contracts. The family business, located just 25 miles from the site, provided 556 tonnes of steel and 7,000 square meters of cladding for the building.

It is a real privilege to open the Combined Line Engineering facility for the joint use of Poseidon and Wedgetail engineering teams.

Co-locating the teams will bring significant advantage to Defence as they operate, train and learn from each other to drive synergies into the maintenance of the two capabilities.

Thank you to all of the stakeholders that have worked hard to deliver such an excellent capability to the Front Line, your efforts will provide benefit for years to come.

The new building, delivered by Defence Equipment & Support and Boeing Defence UK, is located next to the Atlantic Building where the fleet of nine Poseidon P-8A currently operate from. The Line Engineer Building will be occupied by engineers for the Poseidon P-8A and the E-7 Wedgetail aircrafts.

The Line Engineer Building is part of RAF Lossiemouth’s preparations for the E-7 Wedgetail aircraft, other works are ongoing with an internal refit in the Atlantic Building. As well as a new Annex connecting to the Atlantic Building.

The E-7 Wedgetail is the world's most advanced Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft with capability to simultaneously track multiple airborne and maritime targets. The first of three E-7 Wedgetail aircraft is expected to arrive at RAF Lossiemouth in 2025, and will be operated by 8 Squadron.
