Project BIOFUEL

The RAF is beginning to power its aircraft with more sustainable non-fossil fuels.

Sustainability is at the heart of many of our Astra projects as we advance towards our ambitious Net Zero 2040 target.

Project BIOFUEL is one of a number of projects that are researching how we can achieve this in different areas.

Based at RAF Northolt, the Project BIOFUEL team trialled a blend of 35% non-fossil derived aviation fuel which is compatible with the RAF’s multi-engine aircraft.  It was trialled on the BAe 146.  There are many considerations when looking at sustainable aviation fuel use within Defence and the project was carefully designed to take these all into account.

One of the most pressing issues is the supply chain – Defence is 24/7 and it’s imperative that our aircraft are ready to respond at short notice.  A strong supply chain for sustainable aviation fuel is essential to this.  We also needed to be assured that our aircraft can operate effectively, with no impact on their capabilities, using non-fossil derived aviation fuel.

The initial trial has been successfully completed and further work is now being undertaken to assess the next steps in this element of our move towards a more sustainable RAF.
