THE UNIT

Based at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Oxfordshire, the Centre for Air and Space Power Studies (CASPS) seeks to generate evidence-based academic research, provide strategic influence through coordinated engagement with think tanks, allies and other professional bodies in the defence and policy space, leverage the intellectual horsepower of external institutions and RAF personnel, and help inculcate a philosophy of learning and critical thinking within the RAF.

CAS' GLOBAL AIR AND SPACE CHIEFS' CONFERENCE

The Gordon Shephard Memorial Prize

For more than 100 years, the RAF has offered an academic prize in memory of Brigadier-General G F Shephard DSO MC RAF, who was killed in action whilst flying on 19th January 1918. Entries are open to all serving members of the RAF, writing an essay on an air and space power-related subject of their choice.

Further details and calls for entries are issued annually in an Internal Briefing Note.

The Two Air Forces Award

A prize is awarded annually to the RAF serviceperson who writes the most significant article of the year on an aspect of RAF history.  The winner is selected by the RAF Historical Society Committee.  For more information on previous prize winners and how to submit an entry, get in touch via e-mail.

CAS’ FELLOWSHIPS

The RAF sponsors full and part time post-graduate fellowships for serving personnel, which generate focused research papers on an air power-related topic and develop the intellectual capital of the RAF. There is a fellowship to suit all members of the RAF, regardless of rank or specialisation.
