Inspired by the resilience of desperately ill children, four RAF pilots swapped their normal cockpits for one in a transatlantic rowing boat in aid of Starlight Children’s Foundation. Three thousand miles of sea later, our correspondent Flight Lieutenant Chris Sully found out how they fared during their epic voyage.

In 2014, Wing Commander Phil Holdcroft’s youngest daughter was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Isla is now a happy, healthy nine-year-old, thanks to charities like Starlight, supporting her through her fight. Inspired by Isla’s courage and resilience, the Atlantic Flyers wanted to raise money and awareness by rowing 3,000 miles from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean in just 36 days. Not only that, the challenge was a race that they wanted to win!
