Museum Development East Midlands visit RAF College

Last week, the RAF College hosted fourteen members of the regional museums group - Museum Development East Midlands, for a full days training on the salvaging of museum artefacts in the event of a major disaster such as fire or flood. As an Accredited museum, we are required to hold these training days to prepare us in the event of a disaster.

Delegates attending represented the Midland Railway-Butterley, National Trust, Leicestershire County Council, Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery, Spalding Gentleman’s Society, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Museum Development East Midlands. They were joined by the Bursar and Admin Assistant of the RAF College - Karen Laing and Steve Newton.

The event included training on the theory of heritage disaster and the effects of fire and spread of fire in a heritage establishment.

The RAF College Curator - Hazel Crozier conducted a session which consisted of delegates being required to find objects in the College collection from disaster snatch cards. This activity demonstrated how intricate the retrieval of priceless objects in the College’s collection would be in the event of a major disaster.
