HISTORY was brought to life at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire yesterday (22nd April) as the Typhoon Display Team unveiled their new aircraft design for the 2024 season.
Designed specially to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the new paint scheme recalls the Hawker Typhoons of the Second World War. In addition to the camouflage and iconic black and white invasion stripes used by most allied aircraft on D-Day, ZJ913 wears the letters FM-G.
The Typhoon Display Team have used the visually arresting ‘Black Jack’ paint scheme for the last three years. The new design will be seen by thousands of eager spectators at events in the UK, Canada and Europe, demonstrating the powerful capabilities of the RAF’s principal combat aircraft.
ZJ913 was revealed to the world during a media event on Monday 22nd April held at RAF Coningsby, her home base. The Typhoon FGR.Mk 4 is a highly capable and extremely agile multi-role combat aircraft, capable of being deployed for the full spectrum of air operations, including air policing, peace support and high-intensity conflict.
Flight Lieutenant David Turnbull is the Typhoon Display Pilot for the 2024 season. He said: “I cannot wait for people to see this aircraft in the air. This design is a beautiful tribute to the Typhoon pilots of the Second World War, and to everyone who took part in D-Day. It is absolutely an honour to be chosen to fly it.”
