Astra innovation project informs future of fitness

Project DELAPSUS has successfully concluded and is now informing the future of RAF fitness.

The project, which took place at RAF Coningsby over the past year, saw the use of a specialist electric bike to deliver targeted fitness sessions to personnel across the station. Using portable gymnasium equipment to deliver bespoke training, the project enabled more people to be more active, more often.

The results of the project are now being used to inform policy changes and the development of the RAF Fitness Strategy, ensuring the RAF is making the best use of technological advances.

Flt Lt Nic Corrigan, the Project Lead and Station Training Officer at RAF Coningsby, explained: “This project has allowed us to learn, which is the most vital piece in the jigsaw of self-development. It allows us to take physical activity nearer to the front line, whilst keeping our traditional Physical Education Flight offering in place. We can now literally take sessions whenever and wherever Service people need them. RAF Coningsby has benefited from the learning that the project has presented, with it now at the forefront of informing the future role of RAF Physical Training Instructors and Training Officers.”

ICycle ltd as a specialist electric bike company were honoured to work with the RAF to bring a solution to get more staff active. The design and modifications to the e-bike made taking equipment from the gym to the participants a viable option. The Astra programme has highlighted the success and allowed the products to adapt and change.

Ian Gibbs, the CEO if ICycle Ltd, is proud of the contribution all his staff have made to the project. He said: “I am delighted that we have been in place where together, through insight and mutual passion, we have made Project DELAPSUS a success. I hope we continue to embed as part of the RAF fabric by getting more people, more active and more often, not only through formal training but in the day-to-day busy life that the RAF lead.”

Project DELAPSUS is now feeding into the RAF’s work on human performance optimisation. To optimise human performance, we need to focus on how we move, eat, sleep, and think and this is one of the subjects of the upcoming Human Performance Optimisation Symposium, taking place at RAF Coningsby this week. The Symposium will bring together specialists to help shape the future of training in the RAF, through the sharing of ideas from key stakeholders across the whole force.
