Technological systems and specialist equipment are used to collect real data from operations.

The swift sharing of time critical information during missions such as Air Policing is essential.

Currently there is the potential for a delay in critical information reaching the various government departments involved in the decision-making processes and Astra has been working with the Quick Reaction Alert Team on a trial for a possible alternative communication system.

Project DECKARD introduced a secure mobile communications and messaging system that enables mission information to be rapidly shared with all relevant departments. Information is updated during the mission and is instantly visible to all who need it, alongside maps showing the mission’s progress.

By using specific templates, the system also helps to reduce the requirement for the operator to input data while standardising the communications. This ensures that the right message reaches the right group in the same format while still retaining the 'need-to-know' basis for sensitive information.

An initial trial proved the system’s ability to reduce delays in information sharing while increasing overall operational effectiveness. Following the success of the trial, the system is in service now and work is ongoing to bring the capability into routine business for the RAF.
