RAF Benson.

Project PUMAEYE

The Operational Conversion Unit for Puma and Chinook helicopters at RAF Benson trains all future Support Helicopter aircrew in how to operate their specific helicopter type.

It is an intensive training programme and includes both ground and air-based elements, ensuring aircrew are fully prepared for all missions when they join the operational flying squadrons at either RAF Benson (Puma) or RAF Odiham (Chinook).

Project PUMAEYE uses a ground-based Virtual Reality system to provide enhanced training during the Operational Conversion Unit.

The project aims to enhance traditional aircrew training using Virtual Reality, enabling an immersive environment for the aircrew taking part in the training.  It may also remove the need for a live aircraft for several elements of the course.  The package is expected to complement the existing synthetic training conducted in the Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility at RAF Benson, while supporting the RAF's Net Zero 2040 aims.

The trial is in progress and the initial results are expected to be available for review in due course.
