Air and Space Power Review

Overview

Air and Space Power Review (ASPR) is the flagship academic publication of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and has been in publication since 1998. Today it is published by the RAF Centre for Air and Space Power Studies (RAF CASPS) and edited by the Director of Defence Studies for the RAF. ASPR is intended for policymakers and government officials, military personnel, and the academic community. ASPR is regularly published throughout the year, with both print and digital editions available.

Aims and Scope

ASPR is the RAF’s academic contribution to contemporary military thought, with a particular focus on air and space operations and the strategic context in which these capabilities are employed. It accepts a wide range of articles on Defence and Security topics, and encourages contributions from current and former serving military personnel.

Availability

All ASPR articles are published online, and can be accessed using the ASPR Online Index.

Instructions for Authors

Authors are requested to ensure that their work follows the instructions below to avoid undue delay in the consideration of their work. The ASPR Editorial Board considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that:

  • The manuscript is original work and does not duplicate previously published work.
  • The manuscript contains nothing that is abusive, defamatory, libellous, obscene, fraudulent, or illegal.
  • The manuscript is entirely written in British English (UK).

ASPR accepts submissions on a rolling basis throughout the year. Submissions are typically accepted in three forms:

  • Research articles, typically 5-7,000 words in length excluding endnotes. The maximum word count is 10,000 words.
  • Viewpoints, typically 2-4,000 words in length excluding endnotes. The maximum word count is 5,000 words.
  • Book reviews, typically 700-900 words in length. The maximum permissible word count is 1,000 words.

Submissions are to include, as a minimum, the following elements:

  • Title
  • Author details including rank/title, name and email address
  • Short biography of up to 60 words
  • Abstract of up to 130 words
  • Main content
  • Endnotes

References are to be provided in Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition, Notes and Bibliography format. The Author-Date format is not to be used. A bibliography is not to be submitted in addition to endnotes.

Submissions are to be sent electronically in .DOC or .DOCX format. Submissions in .PDF format will be rejected as they are not compatible with the online peer review process. The manuscript should be presented with double line spacing in 11pt Arial with 2cm margins. Submissions should be original and unpublished; however, the Editor will consider proposals for re-publication on a case-by-case basis.

Photographs and illustrations may be embedded into the main document or sent as separate attachments and referenced in the main document. Digital pictures should be saved in the TIFF or JPEG format at a resolution of 300 dpi. It is the responsibility of the author to source any figures (photographs, diagrams or charts) they wish to be included in their article and ensure that they have the agreement of the copyright holders for those figures to be reproduced.

Submissions are to be sent to the Editor at [email protected].

Final design format for presentation on the printed page is at the discretion of the Editor, who has full editorial control over ASPR. No changes made during this process will alter the author’s original meaning without the approval of the author.

Charges and Fees

Authors are not charged any fees, Article Processing Charges or other charges for submission or publication with ASPR. Authors are offered remuneration if their submission is published in ASPR. Additional constraints may apply for remuneration to Service personnel, details of which are available from the Editor. The current remuneration levels are:

  • Research article: £250.
  • Viewpoint: £150.
  • Book Review: £100.

Editorial Process

All submissions to ASPR are peer-reviewed by the Editorial Board. Submissions are reviewed using a double-anonymised system, which means that the reviewer identity is not made visible to author, the author identity is not made visible to the reviewer, and the reviewer and author identity is visible to the Editor.

The Editor has the final decision-making authority for acceptance of a submission.

Originality

Authors should note that academic integrity software is used to subject manuscripts to an originality check. By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to any necessary originality checks during the peer review and production processes. Authors must also certify their work as original before it is published in ASPR.
