Project ASURVEY

Image shows a RAF Poseidon aircraft taking off.
The P8 is the first type of aircraft being considered for the trial, alongside the A400M and BBMF aircraft.

Pre- and post-flight inspections are a labour-intensive task and can carry additional risk for engineers working at height, especially with larger air frames.

Project ASURVEY aims to prove the concept of wired drone inspections of RAF aircraft within a hangar, supporting swifter maintenance programmes and increasing accuracy owing to the high calibre precision equipment the drone uses.

Essential and extensive pre-trial investigations are underway to ensure that the concept can be trialled in a way that meets our exacting safety and security standards.   The trial is expected to begin later this year.  If the concept is proven, it has the potential to be rolled out across the RAF for use with many of our aircraft, enabling swifter and more accurate maintenance programmes with reduced risk to our aviators.
